“Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya” – Dr. John

Before Dr. John hit the pop charts with “Right Place, Wrong Time” and started lovin’ that chicken from Popeye’s, he was the Night Tripper.   This song, from his 1968 debut album “Gris-Gris” has a deceptively mellow vibe, but don’t toke up or take anything stronger while listening to this… this will send you on a seriously bad paranoid trip.  Amazing, sinister jazz/blues from hell.

  1. In 1972 I saw Dr John perform in full Night Tripper regalia & persona. I was at the front & was absolutely entranced. It was as if we had a visitor from another planet. The band were incredible, the two backing singers the most beautiful, exotic women I had ever been in the same room as. I’ve seen Mac a number of times, a free concert on a sunny Sunday afternoon in my local park was an absolute treat. as we picnicked & danced with our friends.

    • Sounds like a great show. I don’t begrudge John’s more recent mainstream appearances/success, but I really wish he’d get freaky again. That first album still scares the crap out of me … albeit in a good way.
