“Fairytale of New York” – The Pogues (featuring Kirsty MacColl)

A tragic and funny Christmas classic. Pogues lead singer Shane McGowan channels his inner Tom Waits for this wonderfully down-and-out duet with Kirsty MacColl. Some politically incorrect language, so not safe for work or little ones.  Look for Matt Dillon as a beat cop putting McGowan in jail.

  1. I met the drummer of the Pogues, Andrew, through mutual friends. In 2001 he was offered £20,000 for a month-long reunion gig. He was reluctant as he had said he would never share a stage with Shane again. His wife said that they needed a new kitchen & he should get his drums out !
This classy video for an equally classy song was directed by Alex Cox (Repo Man.Sid & Nancy).

    • Even as diabolical as my (thankfully!) few mortal enemies are, I’d probably swallow my pride/anger for 20,000 GBP. Then again, Shane has been a bit of a mess over the years, despite the great music, so maybe that’s not worth it. Thanks for the link to the Alex Cox video. Great song/vid!
